Goals- Develop adaptable improved technologies and contribute to increase yield and sustainability of resources in agriculture. - Study socio-economic factors which influence agricultural production in different agro-ecological zones and seek suitable solutions to overcome it. - Set up and implement policies, plans and programs in agricultural research and extension in coordination with other parties. - Document and disseminate research findings and promote exchange with other parties locally or externally. - Develop contact with Arab and regional or international authorities engaged in research and extension and benefit from the facilities and expertise provided by them. - Participate in setting up programs leading to rural development programs in agriculture in coordination with development project and concerned parties. - Prepare and implement plans and programs related to training and fellowships for research and extension personal and upgrade their skills. - Provide consultancy or advisory services to individuals, local or foreign institutions in related specializations.
AchievementAREA issued an agricultural research manual in 2000 developed to Yemeni agriculture and contained several technologies comprising a number of promising cultivars for major crops. A part them technologies related to programs and the five research themes. Through which several agricultural productions constraints are solved in different agro-ecological zones. Under genetic improvement, seven new wheat cultivars were released (Imran-2, Imran-4) in Albonn, (Shibam, Hajja and Bahooth-14, Bahooth-15) in Taez, Ibb, Central Highlands and Northern Highlands, Sarwah, Marib, Hareeb and two cultivars for Seiyn and Hadhramout for Wadi Hadhramout and the last cultivars was barged locally mseiyn and is characterized by salt tolerance. It is expected that cultivars will contribute to increase in wheat yields in Yemen. The onion-breeding program released two onion cultivars, which were distributed with in onion growing regions in Yemen. Bafuteim improved or Bafuteim yellow improved because popular due by desired marketing qualities. Other research programs included lentils and Phaseolus vulgaris cultivars, which were distributed to different regions of the country. Concurrently, different mango cultivars were released which is high yielding with desirable qualities. In the crop management research, AREA released several technologies in the form of package of technology for new cultivars, Control of agricultural pests, among which termites, several fungal diseases in vegetable and fruits. Technologies were released in weed control particularly, in irrigated system in the context to integrated weed control. In livestock research emphasis is given for improve local briefs of sheep’s and goats, Particularly wild sheep, which were, improved genetically in addition to livestock nutrition research. Treatment of crop by-products with urea to enhance its nutritional value, Is of practical value to animal product. In post harvest technology research, several recommendations were issued among which methods of onion harvesting to minimize losses during storage and preservation of dried red pepper quality during storage.
DescriptionAgricultural research system in Yemen is young. In the mid 50’s the first research department was established in Al Koud region, belonging cotton crop. Ten years later, named as Agricultural Research Station. In the 70’s the agricultural research was expanded to include additional crops and regions, and reorganized, creating a new Agricultural Research Center . Different research departments were found in Tuhama and Southern Highlands , and developed later to an agricultural research station in Ta'az region. This consequent development in agricultural research resulted establishment the Agricultural Research and Extension Authority (AREA) in 1983 by cooperation with World Bank and Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO). AREA consists of a main headquarter located at 100 km South part of Sana'a nearby Thamar city, and 8 research stations and 6 national centers representing different agro-ecological conditions in the country.

GoalsThe ARC works in cooperation with other national institutions towards achievement of food security, alleviation of poverty, generation of incomes, promotion of agricultural export and conservation of natural resources.
AchievementThe Agricultural Research Corporation has three technical committees entrusted with the approval of new recommendations and technologies for release. These are : The Variety Release Committee The Crop Husbandry Committee The Pests and Diseases Committee Since its establishment in the first decade of the last century the ARC was spearheading agricultural development in Sudan through generation of new technologies to solve ever emerging agricultural problem.. The battle against black arm which almost wiped out cotton during the thirties of the last century was won through a marvelous work on breeding for resistance against black arm on cotton. More recently some of the success stories were the release of high yielding sorghum varieties and breeding for heat tolerant wheat. In fact many new recommendations and technologies are released each year.
DescriptionAgricultural Research in the Sudan dates back to beginning of the last century. The earliest experimental farms were started at Shendi in 1902 and at El Kamlin in 1903 to explore the possibilities of growing irrigated cotton in the northern Sudan. Shortly afterwards, more experimental farms were started at Rumbek, Tonj and Wau, primarily to test cotton under rain-fed conditions in the southern Sudan. Organized scientific research was started in 1903 with the establishment of the Welcome Tropical Research Laboratories (WTRL). They were part of the Department of Education but their activities included chemical and entomological research related to agriculture. A year later, the Department of Agriculture established the Shambat Research Farm near Khartoum to conduct botanical and agronomic research in close cooperation with the WTRL. Following the successful pilot schemes and experiments on cotton in the Gezira region, the Gezira Research Farm was established near Wad Medani in 1918 to cater for the problems of long staple cotton in the irrigated central clay plains.

Achievement
DescriptionKuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) was established in 1967 by the Arabian Oil Company Limited (Japan) in fulfillment of its obligations under the oil concession agreement with the Government of the State of Kuwait. The Institute was established to carry out applied scientific research in three fields: petroleum, desert agriculture and marine biology. KISR was organized by an Amiri Decree issued in 1973, under which it be came directly responsible, via its board of Trustees, to the Council of Ministers. The main objectives of the institute, as specified in the Amiri Decree, were to carry out applied scientific research, especially related to industry, energy, agriculture, and the national economy, to contribute to the economic and social development of the state and to advise the Government on the country's scientific research policy. An Amiri Decree in 1981 (law No. 28) formally established KISR as an independent public institution. The law specified that the Institute would be governed by the Board of Trustees chaired by a minister chosen by the Council of Ministers. The revised objectives of the Institute remain to carry out applied scientific research that helps the advancement of national industry and to undertake studies relating to the preservation of the environment, resources of natural wealth and their discovery, sources of water and energy, methods of agricultural exploitation and promotion of water wealth. The law entrusted the Institute with undertaking research and scientific and technological consultations for both governmental and private institutions in Kuwait, The Gulf region and the Arab World.
